CRM systems: Myth vs. Reality

We’ve heard many a myth about CRM systems. Have you?

Is it really a disguised piece of spy equipment, installed to keep an eye on salespeople?

Is it really that burdensome to use, or as overwhelming as people think?

We’re here to set the record straight.

Myth #1: CRM systems are solely for increasing sales

Reality:

Depending on what business you are in, you can configure your CRM to help you achieve whatever your goals may be. CRM systems are certainly not one-trick ponies. They don’t have to be installed to directly affect your sales, but can focus on other functional areas, such as:

  • Managing the complete customer experience
  • Controlling and tracking internal processes
  • Sharing knowledge with stakeholders e.g. suppliers

Figure out what your business needs are first; your system should reflect them to help you get the most out of it and flourish faster than before.

Myth #2: CRM systems are a complex chore to use

Reality:

In fact, CRM systems are smart, intuitive models of technology that should assist you on your path to achieving your business goals.

As mentioned before, if it’s tailored to your business, then it will make more sense to you. Once you understand how something works, isn’t it more enjoyable?

Sure, the training required can be time-consuming, but most new work processes need it. With the help of certified Consultants, you can rest assured that configuration, maintenance and training won’t be as daunting as you expect.

Don’t get us wrong, a CRM system is simple to use once it’s off the ground and customised to accommodate your company needs – but that doesn’t necessarily mean that its configuration is an entirely seamless process. We touched on the difference between simplicity and ease in our most recent blog post, “The Danger of Simplicity“.  That’s why you might need some expert guidance and a helping hand to put everything into place.

Myth #3: CRM systems are overwhelming

Reality:

Some businesses might say that installing a CRM system will swamp them in data and smother them in information.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

In fact, they are only as overwhelming as you make them. Simply store essential information and include fields that users are likely to need. Voila! A more streamlined and less clunky system.

CRM systems help to structure business data more effectively, so use this to your advantage and try not to cram it with redundant material.

Myth #4: CRM systems are only for big businesses

Reality:

Says who?

CRM systems offer a whole host of benefits for companies of all sizes. In fact, we work with small to medium sized businesses daily, helping to configure and maintain their Salesforce.

So, SMEs, if you’re listening – don’t be fooled! This a myth for a reason.

You can find value in a CRM system through:

  • Understanding which customers are generating the most sales for you
  • Staying on top of customer activities by tracking your history of dealings with them
  • Organising your data in an efficient manner

But do be careful – just because your larger competitors have installed a specific system that works for them doesn’t mean that you’ll reap the same benefits. Think about whether you can you afford what they have. Do you have the luxury of time to install a more complex, multi-faceted CRM system like them?

Do what’s best for YOUR business and success will follow.
